Rita Mistry – Death On All Hallows’ Eve

Have I told you lately that I…am publishing my book? Well, now it’s finally available on the behemoth that is Amazon.

One day I want to say that my book is also out in all good bookshops but in the meantime two wonderful local places will be stocking it from later on this week. One is in our local town of Bebington, Kraken Comics, and I’ll also have it in Liverpool’s News From Nowhere bookshop.

I probably could have got a little further with local promotion, perhaps tried to dig out local press contacts etc, but as I’m naturally an introvert (no, honestly I am), and as I’m still learning how to go about doing this self-promotion lark, it’s still to happen.

I have created a page on here, and something called a ‘Book Press Release‘ which I will have ready if I get around to contacting any press, so that is a start I suppose.

What I actually want to be doing is knuckling down to writing a second book. I have some ideas about it but that is all. Some of the characters from this first book carry on into it, and I kind of know how the murder happens (is that a spoiler?) but I need to create a proper plot this time.

My first book is a little light on plot. I don’t think that is a problem as such – I really enjoyed developing the characters – but next time I’d like to get better that the craft of plotting, and perhaps creating a twist here and there.

This book began with one idea, of two women chatting over glasses of wine.

I know, I know. That idea is not a stretch, especially for a liberal libation-offering woman such as myself. But I think I have already said somewhere that I’m rubbish at making stuff up. So then I kept having to ask my characters what they might do next. As some of my characters are dead, they can’t do a whole lot, other than give their two-pennies worth. But the ones that are living can certainly react to these thoughts for better or for worse.

I’ve been asked how I would describe my book, what genre would it go under and all that. I guess it does go under crime fiction as there’s possibly been a murder. It’s not too gruesome and on the whole, it’s fairly lighthearted so it possibly tips into that cozy crime world, although I don’t think it’s like a Richard Osman book. It is entertaining, at least that’s what I have been told. And the fact that I have read it through about eleven times to edit and then to find the gaffs, and not wanted to throw it in the bin must count for something.
